PowerLine technology uses the existing power line in your home to transmit network data. With this technology you can network computers without running long patch cables, or you can provide network access to computers installed in areas where the wireless signal in your home cannot reach. PowerLine products can now be used for HD video streaming. It works by connecting a Media Streamer (a multimedia device in your entertainment system which has a network port) via the PowerLine HD adapter to a wall outlet and connect a 2nd adapter in close proximity to your router. The media streamer then has access to your local media files (audio and video) as well as online content.
There are two levels of technology:
1. Homeplug Turbo 1.0
This standard gives a theoretical maximum throughput of up to 85 Mbps. Real-life performance figures are typically way below 20 Mbps down to less than 5 Mbps - depending on the signal quality and length of the cable. Application: Mostly usable for Internet access and low quality video streaming. Too slow for HD video or huge file transfers in the local network. Expect this technology to go away very soon. The new AV standard is simply better all around.
2. Homeplug AV
Rated at a maximum of 200 Mbps this technology is a huge improvement over the 1.0 Turbo standard. It adds better data encryption to the increased data throughput, yet remains as easy to install as the previous version. Thanks to the performance boost, the Homeplug AV HD adapter can be used for HD video streaming, and that is a market growing quite strong.
